Many visitors stopped by and were greeted by those manning the booth. Many questions arose regarding the Built Green Home at Suncadia. The most common ones were:

How much does it cost to make my home "green"?

What "green" products are available?

What benefits are there from having a "green" home?

It was very informative hearing the questions which were asked. The house's sales price will be about $1.4 million. The developer is Brenda Nunes.

CMI President Grey Lundberg said Nunes had worked with his company in the past, and approached him to build the Roslyn house as a showcase project for Built Green. Lundberg said his goal is to show other contractors that building green is not "a weird way" of building, which is what he used to think.

"We wanted to show other builders these are things they're doing already," he said. People are already putting in efficient heating and cooling systems, controlling mold and moisture, using quality engineered lumber and generally building in ways that make a home last a long time. All of these are ways of building green.

Exposed posts and beams on the lodge, as well as some of the furniture, will be made of mostly Douglas fir and some pine trees taken from this site and milled in Roslyn, he said. When it's finished, there will be Energy Star appliances and light fixtures inside, as well as geothermal, radiant floor heating and air filtration systems. Outside, pervious pavers will be used to hold water on site and dought-tolerant native plants will be put in.

During construction crews will use eco-friendly paints, caulking, sealants and insulation throughout the building.

Among the project's 26 total sponsors are Puget Sound Energy, the Environmental Home Center, Associated Earth Sciences, Sally Promer Nichols and Mutual Materials.

The house is set to be fully complete in spring 2006, when it will open for tours.

For updates on construction, see the project's blog, posted at http://thebuiltgreenhome.blogspot.com.

</mailto:dipikak@djc.com><mailto:dipikak@djc.com></mailto:dipikak@djc.com>

Built Green Fun Facts

In 2004, more than 14,000 homes were constructed nationally using local green building program guidelines. Built Green of King and Snohomish Counties certified 1,652 of those homes – more than 10 percent of the national total.

Built Green was launched in 1999 and has residential green home certification programs for single-family, multifamily, remodels and communities. It is the second largest green home building program in the country.

Built Green has grown from four founding member builders in 2000 to 250 member companies today. Ninety-six builders are part of the program, including nine of the largest builders in the Puget Sound area, according to the Puget Sound Business Journal.

Built Green has certified more than 5,500 residential projects since 2000. Last year, Built Green certified projects accounted for over 14 percent of all new homes in King and Snohomish counties.

The Built Green website (http://www.builtgreen.net/) receives approximately 5,000 unique visitors per month.

Product Boards from Kittitas Valley Tour of Homes

These are two of the product boards which were showcased at the Kittitas Valley Tour of Homes in mid-September.

Notice how we have labeled the different products- showing where the product will be located outside of the Built Green Home at Suncadia.

Aerial Photos

Ron Parker, a good friend of mine, flew over the site and took this picture. (August 25, 2005) – Developer Brenda Nunes dreamed of a beautiful custom-designed mountain home nestled amongst the richness of the Northwest wilderness that would demonstrate the fiscal and environmental benefits of green building techniques and materials. To make her dream a reality, she purchased land in the six thousand acre resort community of Suncadia, located just outside the city of Roslyn, Wash. and started building a team.

With the generous support of many sponsors and the technical assistance of the Built Green program, Nunes is breaking ground on the Built Green™ Home at Suncadia. The building team has been assembled, the land cleared and the project schedule is in place. Beginning Fall 2005, the home will be open for tours and educational sessions on green building techniques while underway. The project is scheduled for completion in 2006.

“We are looking to demonstrate that a custom home can use green building techniques for the same costs as traditional building practices,” noted Nunes. “And, we will share the steps of the process through our Blog. Our goal is environmental responsibility with a financial win-win.”

The custom 3,000 square foot, four bedroom, three and a half bath home is located on the 13th green of Suncadia’s Prospector Golf Course. The luxurious yet green home design was created by architect, Richard Fisher, AIA, and will be built as a five star Built Green™ home by CMI Homes (Bellevue, Wash).

This showcase home is among the first resort property to be developed that demonstrates the building practices promoted by the Built Green™ program. The most recent past project was in the Issaquah Highlands in 2004.

The Built Green components of the project in Suncadia include site development, energy efficiency, health and air quality, construction efficiencies and materials. The project will have limited site disturbance, on-site infiltration and will use pervious pavers and drought-tolerant native vegetation. It will have geothermal heating, radiant floor heating, fluorescent lighting, energy star appliances and light fixtures, as well as higher insulation values. Indoors and outdoors, the building process will use environmentally-friendly materials, paints, caulking, sealants and insulation. There will be very little carpeting and a state of the art indoor air filtration and cleaning system.

Within the construction, the materials used will be innovative, durable and recycled. I'm sure Pam Worner with Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish County was delighted to see all of the packets fly out the door (pworner@mbaks.com) since she is manning sponsorship.

Easy Foundation from ICF Block

Here's some interesting informaiton from Grey from CMI Homes (the builder)..."The foundation is made out of ICF block. We are using Arxx, an insulated concrete wall system in North America. They were referred to us by Washington Aggregates and Concrete Association. The ICF blocks are energy efficient and are easy to install. We essentially built a basement in two days. If we had known, we would have done the walls of the house as well with this system. With the ICF system, you install formwork, framing, insulation, vapor barrier and strapping, in one step. The system reduces drafts and humidity."

The product was supplied (complimentary) by Glacier Northwest, Inc. http://www.arxxwalls.com/

Clearing and Preserving

The trees are being removed where necessary, but many are going to be used within the construction.
